Low Libido and Sexual Dysfunction

Low libido and sexual dysfunction are strong indicators of hormone deficiency and imbalance among the sex hormones Testosterone, Estradiol and Progesterone. Both men and women come from Myrtle Beach, Horry County, Brunswick County and throughout South and North Carolina to HRT-MD to seek relief of their symptoms with Hormone replacement therapy.

Some of the most common complaints of patients coming to HRT-MD for hormone replacement therapy are low libido, erectile dysfunction and dyspareunia (painful intercourse). The ability to maintain a healthy sex life and intimacy with one’s partner is essential for positive mental health and a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately many men and women don’t feel comfortable discussing sexual issues with their traditional doctors and so go without treatment. At HRT-MD we consider sexual health a vital part of our assessments and we work with our patients to find solutions that work best for each as individual.

Sexual Dysfunction & Low Testosterone

For men with low testosterone, hormone replacement therapy can make a dramatic improvement on erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is the inability to attain and maintain an erection firm enough for sexual penetration. For some men they are able to achieve an erection but cannot maintain the erection long enough to reach orgasm. Testosterone is not the only important hormone for men. Estrogen receptors within the penis and testis are very sensitive to estradiol levels and If levels gets too high or too low then erectile dysfunction may occur. It is important to balance all the hormones in an HRT program. Some men who need increased blood flow to the penis will benefit from phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors better known by their trade names Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. Nutraceuticals such as L-Arginine, Ginko and Yohimbine are also successful options. Regular exercise, reduced smoking, reduced alcohol consumption and lowering stress levels are also critical for health erectile function.

Female Sexual Dysfunction

Low libido before and after menopause are very common. Only about half of women aged 57 to 73 are sexually active, with those who are considered active having sex less than twice a month. Overall 30 to 70% of menopausal women self-identify as having low libido. With loss of estrogen during menopause there is decreased blood flow to the vagina resulting in atrophy, vaginal dryness and painful intercourse. Low testosterone in women reduces arousal and self esteem and and reduces the enjoyment of sexual climax. Low testosterone leads to clitoral atrophy, which is a smaller clitoris making sexual stimulation more difficult. Many studies have shown that hormone replacement therapy improves sexual dysfunction for women in menopause. In one study women on HRT reported 44% increased interest in sex compared with the placebo group.
